Game Dude
UX/UI Redesign

Overview

The current website for gamedude.com does not reflect the greatness of its physical store. One of the main issues on the website is the fact that finding a game is very inefficient and difficult. In addition, if a user wants to buy a game, the user has to place an order by phone, mail, e-mail, or fax. There is no way to order a game from the website directly. Our team believes that the store will benefit from this redesign in order to make the website reflect the success of the physical store.

Solution

Through the user research, we have confirmed that most of the participants found the existing Game Dude website aesthetically unappealing and outdated, difficult to navigate, and information was difficult to find. Our group’s redesign recommendations include:

  • Implementing a searching system for games, gaming systems, and accessories
  • Improving navigation experience of games, gaming systems, and accessories
  • Refreshing the buying/selling system

Implementing the recommendations and continuing to work with users will ensure a continued user-centered website.

Clean Navigation

We started with a sketch that kept the navigation bar that Game Dude currently has on its website which lists the gaming companies. Our sketch details the progression from when the user hovers over the menu bar item with the mouse. We decided to keep this idea from the sketch and transfer it to our wireframe. We decided to keep the idea of having the same information such as upcoming titles and events on the Game Dude homepage currently but reorganize it from the sketch. In our wireframe, we have the upcoming titles, shopping by genre, and event information on the front page but split by sections. In our final mock-up we added a colored theme of black and yellow to be consistent with the Game Dude theme colors and put in a scrolling picture of the store that is present on the website currently to add retro appeal.

Improved Search Functionality

Our sketching resulted with a redesign of the homepage with several added features. The major modification we made in our redesign was to add a search bar on the home page. This lead to two additional implemented features in our redesign: a search results page and a product details page. Our team felt that these three components were essential in designing a search feature for the website

New Buying System

We created a page that had a cleaner navigation. We categorized a lot of elements together and created more options for presenting the information to customers. As we see in the figure above, there are sorting options, as well as ways to narrow down the number of options presented to the customers. This allows for a customer to find games they might be interested in faster.Furthermore, the individual categories of items are the top focus which was an important design choice as they are the most important categories that people may be dividing their search by.
